Equations of Awakening

Is an acorn already an oak tree? When Carl Jung said, ‘The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are,’ he was pointing to a subtractive truth. This article offers a completely new lens on consciousness, ego, and personal awakening. Using the framework of mathematical equations, it charts how inspiration integrates with the cosmos, how our awareness aligns to create a frictionless flow, and how the ego actively interferes with our natural evolution. It is an exploration of how letting go of the illusions we use to protect ourselves is the only way to arrive at the zero point of the present—and ultimately, to awaken.

‘The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.’

Carl Jung

More and more we feel like we are remembering who we truly are, which feels like transformation taking place.

The becoming.

And whilst some share this, others don’t experience it.

How do we absorb knowledge and experience?

Or is it part of ‘us’?

It starts seemingly external and is taken in using the categories and labels of language, pictures etc. before being made deeper sense of through a process of integration. Sometimes it arrives directly via these deeper means too, such as an intuition or a feeling.

The word ‘inspiration’ means to ‘breathe into’ or ‘in-vent.’

When we feel inspired, it's like a spark is born and we breathe into it, and it burns like fire.

But what makes some things more inspirational than others?

As they are external and often at surface level, when not integrated, they contain only the potential for transformation.

The word ‘Integrate’ means ‘to touch or handle’ this fire, that you have breathed inspirational life into. To get closer to it and become part of the fire of your own inspiration.

Discussing with good friend Colin enabled integration of this concept. Inspiration also came from Lisa Cairns, when she said she recognises that what is shared may feel like a foreign language for some. And that is ok.

Inspiration for you may be vastly different to inspiration for someone else and when processed externally doesn't need to make sense to anyone but the inspired.

But why is it sometimes we feel inspired by something but we don’t know why?

Experience in the education sector fosters a genuine passion for developing people's thinking. Taking in (k)new knowledge often adds something, but the deepest realisations happen when we are fully in the (k)now.

This ‘remembering’, this ‘re-cognition,’ re-connects us with something that was already ‘pre-sent’ but we weren't aware of.

This re-pre-sents ‘becoming,’ in the same way an acorn might remember it becomes an oak when it already is one.

But is an acorn an oak tree or is an oak tree an acorn?

They both become each other after all. And this is cyclical.

For humans and consciousness this can feel like becoming someone else. If you compare yourself to 10 years ago you may realise you are someone else but also, if you were to grab a still frame of experience at certain points over the last 10 years, you are every one of these moments of experience, and all of them together!

‍ ‍

It is interesting to consider how different the experience is from the last moment you can capture? When do the changes actually take place?

And how about the other way around. How different is the external experience of these moments in contrast to what you experience in any moment you capture?

Becoming increasingly able to participate as who we already are, is the art of integration.

You do not build your future self; you strip away the friction to reveal the harmony already ‘pre-sent’ to enable your ‘self’ to become.

A way to consider these questions and concepts is formulaically but it is important to remember that these words and these equations are examples of this very becoming.

They may be the inspiration that requires integration to enable transformation for you and your becoming.

We are programmed for cause and effect, and to observe in a linear manner. This makes these equations accessible but the reality is they aren't linear.

In the same way as considering the past coming after the present goes against what is deeply ingrained into our safe construct of reality.

Because the past is just a memory that we cast out from the present and then render in our mind.

It's all here! It is just how we piece it together to construct and integrate our reality.

Equation 1: Continuous Integration of Inspiration across the Cosmos

Inspiration x Integration = Transformation

Inspiration and integration require each other as fuel and oxygen require each other to transform into fire. This is the perfectly balanced breath in and out of experience.

is individual and enters experience as part of each unique aperture of awareness. This occurs as relationships from across the cosmos converge into moments or perspectives of awareness with ‘you,’ which breathes life into your experience. One moment might provide you something that you haven't experienced before and feel like an elevation of consciousness or a widening of this aperture of awareness.

In this way, each moment acts as a true horoscope, which is not charting just celestial objects, but the exact convergence of literally every relationship with everything in the universe, the coming together that creates each aperture of consciousness you experience.

The grounded practice of processing this awareness into experience, to build anew. The lungs of awareness receive this new inspired breath and it radiates out through relationship with the cosmos. Making sense of something and how it enters and becomes awareness. This may require a shift to allow openness to inspiration to absorb it fully, with positive and valuable purpose and intent.

The 0 point of the present. It is the fundamental shift in perspective, as the aperture is enriched, which changed perception of reality; its shape and the state of your awareness with it. Mathematics shows us that a balanced integration of inspiration leaves no residual friction, resulting flawlessly in the present moment.

(Closed Surface Integral): Represents integrating with the dynamic interwoven web of existence.

(The Cosmos): The total sum of all interwoven relationships converging on the aperture of awareness.

Breathing into inspiration over a few days, would be represented by (dt); but to integrate a spark across the entire interconnected web of existence (d), pulls the whole universe into the zero point of the present (0).

Equation 2: The ecosystem is you

Awareness × Alignment = Coherence

When the aperture of awareness harmonises the resonant frequency of the cosmos, it generates the frictionless flow of a united ecosystem.

The continuous opening to observation, experience and feelings from the delicate focal point where every relationship with everything in the universe converges.

Deliberately tuning your state to harmonise with the surrounding ecosystem and / or the ecosystem to harmonise with you.

Perhaps in reading that you realise the fluidity of that relationship, as tuning yourself in an ecosystem is to tune the ecosystem.

Perfect alignment therefore, is symbiotic unity and recognition ‘you’ are the ecosystem and the ecosystem is ‘you’.

To become the ecosystem you are united with. The deep relational flow of energy without friction.

The multiplier observation: If we play with this equation and bring an element to 0 or rearrange it, we see that to be aware without agency for alignment is passive and to align without awareness is blind. ‘You’ are in fact already both.

Equation 3a: The Alchemy

Transformation x Coherence = Becoming

Now that we have calculated Transformation and Coherence, when we multiply these together, we find Becoming! This occurs when the frictionless present is multiplied by the unified consciousness ecosystem of coherence. This alchemy points not to a profound new state but a balanced, flawless and harmonious presence in the ‘now.’

The 0 point of the present. It is the fundamental shift in perspective, as the aperture is enriched, which changed perception of reality; its shape and the state of your awareness with it. Mathematics shows us that a balanced integration of inspiration leaves no residual friction, resulting flawlessly in the present moment.

To become the ecosystem you are united with. The deep relational flow of energy without friction.

The unfolding evolution of the dynamic change of transformed perspectives, unites with the harmonising frequency of coherence, to perfectly balance change and stability. It is the neutralised path of non-interfered inevitability. When we calculate this, Becoming equals exactly zero. This demonstrates the acorn and the oak. Becoming is not a destination in the future. It is not something you have to strive towards. Becoming is arriving completely at the zero point of the present.

3b The Fallacy of Perfect Stability

Transformation = Becoming / Coherence

When we rearrange equation 3a to 3b (above) we see transformation equals becoming divided by coherence, we observe that coherence requires awareness and alignment with a dynamic system. If we aren't coherent we haven't transformed. Our ‘Human Doing's’ obsession with stability and structure leads us to be too rigid, too stable, too controlled, and therefore, too undynamic.

The potential for transformation drops the more we try to explain it or reach for it.

A rigid system seeking a rigid future, cannot evolve fluidly. To achieve a new shape requires the intentional lowering of the guard, allowing for the connections required to let the cosmos flow and sort you into an order of becoming.

The ability to shift into a pre-sent new shape (Transformation) requires the system's unbounded active evolution (Becoming) divided by its uninterrupted flow (Coherence). Mathematically, if coherence drops to zero due to rigidity, the equation breaks. Transformation becomes impossible.

Equation 3c: Another Becoming - The Subtractive Truth

Becoming = Transformation - Incoherence

If we look at this from the opposite of coherence, (incoherence) we see a useful truth.

The interference of the rigid ego and the illusion of control. It is the friction that closes your aperture, generating a false and illusory sense of security of isolation from the infinite, interconnected relationships of the universe.

The ego can generate interference and incoherence.

We are all brought up in the doing state, learning that hard work leads to ‘success’ in a linear sense. That new skills, habits, experiences give you more of the tools you need to ‘succeed,’ and this has been incorrectly tied into personal and spiritual growth too.

The subtractive truth shown by this equation, and evident in spiritual and personal practices and services that support becoming, is the unintuitive opposite.

The truth is that creating space by removing the noise gives the room required for the personal transformation and becoming to naturally unfold.

You do not build the future state; you strip away the friction to reveal the harmonious and inevitable next moment of awareness.

Equation 3d: The Paradox of Interference

Transformation - Becoming = Incoherence

The definitions remain the same but the equation is re-arranged from 3c to 3d to shine a light on the paradox created by ourselves.

Incoherence is created by the very thing that gives us a sense of coherence, of us; of ourselves; our identity.

Here is the paradox.

The static, ego, or defensive armour is the interference to transformation. It is precisely the gap between the natural expression emerging as a future state of transformation and your current level of unfolding (Becoming).

We have evolved to uphold our ego which plates our defensive armour because we mistake the security we gain from the illusion of stability. Without this, we may be anxious, we may fear we will drift. This surfaces visibly in examples of people filling all the silences in conversation because of the awkwardness and threat this pokes at their own ego when they don’t continually uphold it.

In truth, the weight of this defence is the very friction preventing us from slipping into the frictionless flow of the cosmos.

The continual internal and external narration of the person we think we are, upholds it. We believe it and we think everyone does too.

This is also why you see the things you focus your attention on more. E.g. thinking of getting something new like a car, you now see that very car everywhere!

It was always there. We blinker ourselves into the truth we want to see. We narrate the reality we want to experience.

This completely re-frames what 'interference' actually is. It is not random bad habits or external enemies. It is the literal, measurable resistance between what the ecosystem is ready for you to be, and what you are currently allowing yourself to be.

It shows that interference is self-generated by our refusal to simply let the future state arrive. This impacts us all.

Those attachments we are yet to let go of, those anxieties of being what we think we should be for others.

The societal expectations that pressure us to ‘fit in’. The cultural norms we may find ourselves doing, despite not actually wanting to.

Final thoughts

We can liberate ourselves from some of these constructs that fuel incoherence, to be truly and beautifully our nature-intended ‘selves.’ This is awakening.

Awareness is that first step. To see the constructs, or see through them, for what they are and unveil the truth that was already hiding there, waiting.

Recognise in the equations the choice of alignment and how this influences coherence with the potential transformation and inevitable becoming.

Whichever lifetime this occurs in.

Inevitability - from the Latin root inevitabilis (unavoidable), combining the prefix in- (not), evitabilis (avoidable), and the verb evitare (to avoid or shun).

Do not be unaware of what is unavoidable to prevent inevitability.

Be aware of what is avoidable to ‘out-vent’ inevitability.

‘When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.’

An Invitation to Strike the Tuning Fork of you: Find Order in a Chaotic World

We often feel that modern life is a battle against a rising tide of chaos. We feel fragmented, overwhelmed by noise, and constantly running just to stand still. The prevailing narrative tells us that this slide into disorder is inevitable and that depressingly, things just naturally fall apart.

But that narrative is incomplete…

We often feel that modern life is a battle against a rising tide of chaos. We feel fragmented, overwhelmed by noise, and constantly running just to stand still. The prevailing narrative tells us that this slide into disorder is inevitable and that depressingly, things just naturally fall apart.

But what if that narrative is incomplete?

At the heart of my work lies a philosophy called Philokosmia—the love of universal harmony. It is a worldview that asserts we are not separate, isolated islands fighting against our environment. We have forgotten we are living, breathing parts interwoven with it.

And just like a musical instrument, our ability to play a beautiful note depends entirely on how we are tuned to the orchestra around us.

The Lie of the Closed Box (Understanding Entropy)

To understand why we feel overwhelmed, we must borrow a concept from physics: Entropy. In simple terms, entropy is the measure of disorder. The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that in a closed system, entropy always increases. Things decay. Coffee goes cold. Rooms get messy. Energy dissipates into chaos.

This sounds depressing. It seems to confirm our worst fears: that life is a losing battle against disorder.

But there is a crucial caveat that is often missed: entropy only inevitably reigns supreme in a closed system, a sealed box cut off from the outside world, the laboratory and fake, problematic conditions that often restrict materialism.

We were born out of this world in beautiful coherence. Proof we are not descending into chaos. We are ever more coherent and ever more conscious. We are incredible and can choose to be more optimistic.

You are not a closed system.

You breathe air created by plants. You eat food grown from the soil. You exchange ideas, emotions, and connections with other human beings. Your world is fundamentally open.

The moment you close yourself off through isolation, rigid thinking, or defensive cynicism, you become more of a closed system, and tip the balance towards entropy. The noise wins.

But the moment you open yourself up in a coherent way, you gain access to a different power entirely.

Creating Negentropy: The Philokosmian Stance

If entropy is the slide into chaos, its opposite is Negentropy (negative entropy).

Negentropy is the phenomenon of things becoming more ordered, more complex, and more alive over time. A seed growing into an oak tree is negentropy in action. A scattered team coalescing around a shared purpose is negentropy.

Philokosmia and coherence coaching provides the ‘why’ and ‘how’ to actively practise generating negentropy.

It is the realisation that by tuning your relationship with your environment, you don't just survive the chaos; you transform it into order. And not just for you, for your environment too! You take in raw energy and give back coherence. You become an agent of order.

Your world is only as small and chaotic as you allow it to be. When you open your system and tune it correctly, your capacity for harmony is limitless.

The Art of Tuning Your Environment

So, how do we practise this? We don't try to control the whole world.

Instead, we incrementally tune our immediate environment. The physical, relational, and mental to reduce friction and invite flow.

Tuning is not passive acceptance. It is active curation. It is about ensuring that the inputs into your open system nourish you, so the outputs you give back are harmonious. Get this right and you give back to the world in a very powerful way.

Here is what tuning might look like in reality:

1. Tuning the Physical Space

If your desk is buried under paperwork, your visual field is broadcasting "chaos" to your brain every time you sit down. That is high entropy.

Tuning it: Clearing that space isn’t just a chore; it’s an act of Philokosmia. You are creating a pocket of order that allows your mind to focus. You are reducing the cognitive load of your environment so your energy can flow into your passion, not into filtering out visual noise.

2. Tuning Relationships

Consider a relationship that always leaves you feeling drained and defensive. That interaction is a closed loop of increasing disorder.

Tuning it: This might mean setting a boundary (closing a leak) or changing the dynamic by entering the conversation with genuine curiosity rather than defensiveness (opening the system to new information). You move the encounter from transactional friction to generative connection. This may require bold and honest sharing of how you feel, what causes it and how you would like it to be different in the future.

3. Tuning the Digital Input

Doom-scrolling news feeds is perhaps the ultimate example of voluntarily inviting entropy into your mind. It is pure, unfiltered chaos.

Tuning it: Curating your inputs rigorously. Choosing to read something deep rather than something fast. Engaging with ideas that expand your horizon rather than shrink it with fear. Recognising the false dopamine hit that grabs you and holds you, energising you in that moment but draining you and your coherence.

How Coherence Coaching Helps You Tune

The challenge is that when we are deep inside our own noise, it is incredibly difficult to hear which strings are out of tune. We become habituated to the dissonance. We think the chaos is just ‘how things are.’

Through Coherence Coaching you realise you have more choice than you think. That you find yourself out of tune through a lack of awareness of the societal pressure, peer pressure, work culture or perceived trappings that can be unlocked, opened, set free.  Incrementally you can go from feeling like a B Flat to a B Natural.

Coaching acts as an external tuning fork. It is a systemic audit of your life that helps you realise where you are leaking energy into disorder, and where you have closed yourself off from sources of nourishment. You can rethink your boundaries and your outlook to be the best version of you and in doing so bring coherence and harmony to others too!

Don't just look at yourself in isolation. Your being is a product of your world. We see people demonstrate how disorder in mind can bring disorder in body. We hear the saying, ‘mind over body.’ Philokosmia invites you to go one better…

‘Mind in tune with body’

Which leads to

‘Awareness of harmony with the world’

And then

‘not just wellbeing but coherent being and elevated consciousness’

Which leads to

‘awareness and love of harmony with the universe… …which is the definition of Philokosmia’

We see coolness in the confidence and harmony when you are taken back by someone who brings their full self and knows who they are.  They are in flow, they are coherent.

Identify the specific environmental tweaks you can start to consider. These may be in your routines, your leadership style, that piece of work that will prop up your promotion chances and maybe your ego. Perhaps your personal boundaries. What do you actually have to do to meet that important but not fulfilling part of your world? Can you do less there? How can you reuse that time and energy to move towards coherence?

You can and should stop the slide into entropy and kickstart the flow of negentropy.

Conclusion: Your World is Wide Open

Philokosmia teaches us that we are not victims of a disorderly universe. We are participants in a grand, interconnected harmony.

If your world feels small, closed, and chaotic, know that this is a temporary state of untuned instruments. By having the courage to open your system and the discipline to tune your environment, you can begin to generate order in your own life, and crucially, give that order back to the world around you.
